Rheba and Joe McMichael began making pottery in 1970 when their son Co was born. They began developing their skills working on the potters wheel and also hand forming with clay slabs so they could work at home and share in the day to day joys of raising their son. Both had a love of art. Joe studied architecture at Catholic University in Washington, DC while Rheba took art courses at the University of Maryland. They chose pottery because, with clay, the possibilities seemed limitless and the results were both artistic and useful. In the early days they made mostly planters, selling their work to friends, relatives and nurseries. As their skills developed, they began making a variety of useful items and started selling their ware at fine craft shows. By 1974 they had established their business on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and were supporting themselves full time with their craft. From an early age, their son Co took an interest in the pottery where he was encouraged to help with the many interesting processes in designing and creating pottery. By the time he was eighteen, Co had become a skilled potter working full time with his parents in the family business. Today the McMichael family continues to enjoy their work together in their studio in Virginia’s beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, bringing you the many unique creations for which they have become so well known for. Their work sells at the nations finest craft shows and in many top galleries.
